The host of Joy FM’s news analysis programme, Newsfile, Samson Lardy Anyenini, and his guests have contributed ¢1,100 to free a man who has been jailed for stealing plantain.
A Koforidua District Magistrate Court “A” sentenced a 19-year-old barber, Solomon Aklotey, to two months imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to the charge stealing.
He, however, explained that he stole the plantains to sell to take care of his girlfriend who has given birth recently but was unable to give her money for upkeep.
He was then sentenced to a fine of ¢600 in default of which he would serve two months in prison with hard labour.
Aklotey could not pay the fine hence was thrown into jail.
The Newsfile host and guests – North Tongu MP, Smauel Okudzeto Ablakwa; editor-in-chief of the New Crusading Guide Newspaper, Kweku Baako; private legal practitioner, Martin Kpebu and General Secretary of the Ghana Medical Association, Dr Justice Yankson – touched by the plight of the teenager, decided to contribute to secure his release.
Part of the money will be used to secure Aklotey’s release out of jail. The remainder is to be used to provide for the new mother.
